Using MotionTag has been critical for accurately and granularly registering travel behavior across transport modes. This approach substantially reduces error and bias compared to self-reported measures, enabling us to observe actual behavioral change rather than stated intentions. Combined with a randomized controlled framework, this strategy has allowed us to estimate the causal effects of several transport policies (such as road pricing and subsidies) and to identify how individuals adjust mobility decisions across all transport modes in response to economic incentives.

In our research on gender mobility in Curitiba’s favelas, motiontag’s smartphone-based tracking enabled us to collect detailed route, modal choice, and travel time data directly within these communities. Unlike traditional Origin–Destination surveys - often aggregated into large spatial zones - or large-scale mobile phone big data, which typically lack socio-demographic detail, this approach allowed us to capture individual mobility trajectories linked to key characteristics such as household composition, gender, income, and race. This combination provided unprecedented insight into gender-based mobility inequalities and supports the development of more inclusive urban mobility policies.
