How Klima-Taler app provides mobility insights while rewarding green transportation

Harnessing smart technology for data-driven transport planning

As the urban planning landscape is rapidly evolving, smartphone apps emerge as powerful tools for collecting affordable, high-quality data critical to informed decision-making. With impactful incentives and rewards for individual green mobility choices, the project creates a holistic approach to sustainable urban planning through its innovative fusion of data collection, gamification, and incentivisation.

By empowering individuals to participate actively in carbon reduction efforts, Klima-Taler app demonstrates the potential for technology to catalyse positive environmental change within local communities, while simultaneously being a source of reliable granular mobility data.

The challenge: limits of traditional sustainable initiatives

Traditional sustainability initiatives often face obstacles related to user engagement, data accuracy, and long-term impact measurement. Reliance on self-reported mobility behaviour introduces errors and inefficiencies, making it difficult to quantify real-world behavioural shifts. To ensure an effective and scalable solution, Klima-Taler clients require technologically advanced approach capable of:

  • Accurately detecting and categorising mobility modes without requiring user input
  • Delivering insights into CO₂ emissions reduction for every individual user
  • Sustaining long-term behavioural shifts through an effective, automated reward system

Motiontag’s advanced mobility tracking technology provides high-precision, automated detection of 12 travel modes, ensuring 97%-accurate and reliable data collection without user input. This already enables dozens of cities to drive informed policy decisions, optimize transport planning, and implement effective incentive-based programs for long-term behavioral change.

The solution: leveraging AI-based mode detection for sustainability

As a proven technology partner, motiontag provides a powerful tracking SDK that is integrated into the Klima-Taler app. Participating users can voluntarily and pseudo-anonymously have their mobility behavior recorded – 24/7, energy-saving, and in compliance with data protection regulations.

The system automatically recognizes up to 12 modes of transport, including public transport lines with line and operator information in the given area. The entire route chain is recorded completely and inter-modally – from walking to the bus to the regional train.

Impact: data for analysing, planning, and motivating

The continuous data collection enables cities and regions to:

  • analyze at regional, city, neighborhood, and specific line level
  • eliminate the need for extensive technical infrastructure and specialized personnel, providing ready-to-use insights
  • collect data adhered to strict privacy standards, ensuring user trust
  • implement targeted initiatives that optimize resource allocation, and enhance climate impact
  • create reward mechanisms tied to local businesses, which creates a mutually beneficial sustainability ecosystem

Looking ahead: scaling the community and sustaining impact

Since launching in 2023 with 10 municipalities, the Klima-Taler Network has grown to 24 cities and municipalities by the end of 2024. For 2025, more than 40 cities and districts have confirmed participation, including the entire Kreis Viersen and the first regional association. By the end of 2025, the network aims to include around 80 cities, municipalities, and districts.

Promoting inter-city collaboration

Documented outcomes from cities highlight the advantages of shared learning. By leveraging collective knowledge through the Klima-Taler Network, cities can accelerate the adoption of best practices and more efficiently achieve climate targets.

Measurable climate goals: Results from participating cities

Gamification elements in the Klima-Taler app have proven to be highly effective in motivating a broad demographic to adopt more environmentally friendly habits. Insights from the 2024 Klima-Taler App User Survey in Gladbeck, conducted by IMOBIS and FONA – Research for Sustainability, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, show:

72%

users report making more environmentally friendly transport mode choices

4/5

users are over 30 years old

Conclusion

With motiontag’s advanced mobility intelligence, the Klima-Taler app is successfully expanding, offering municipalities a replicable, data-centric model for driving sustainable mobility adoption. Motiontag is continuously leading the technological transformation, equipping cities with the infrastructure necessary for a sustainable future.
